Kinja'd!!!

Problem turned out to be my brand-new-from-China replacement alternator. I had the original 45-year-old alternator rebuilt and she's back in business. So happy! Hilarious car-related girl stuff below.

I took a girl home a few days ago and in the morning we were talking:
Her: You know, I started talking to you because you had that car
Me: hahaha (thought this was a joke)
Her: Seriously though

So the Top Gear Top Tip is that classic cars will get you laid? Hmmmmm.

Most importantly however, where do we draw the line at classic cars? What constitutes a car being "classic?"

Pre-1980. 1980 and up is just "old" to me.

Okay, I can see that logic, and I like that answer.

If I have a 1997 SL600 Sport, where does that rank on the classic/old/????/new scale?

I'd say old. But old is cool. I have a '99 Suburban which I consider old. I think vintage starts at 25 years old. Nice ride btw! Love the old Mercedes

Officially here in the US at least, yes, it's 25 years old is allowed to get a QQ plate.

Do you think there's just the three different categories for cars to sit in? Just curious, because it's a topic I've always felt a little fuzzy about it. When I go to shows, obviously, I don't belong with the old cars, but on an equal level, if I get grouped into an "age" bracket, I get stuck with some import cars that are, well, less than impressive on the performance scale.

That's not saying I'm embarrassed to be seen parked next to a Prelude, but I guess I draw my line at cars that are really well kept vs super modified cars that don't really fit in.

I've certainly snuck into the ritzier sections of car shows, but I guess that the age and the running gear set me apart, and while I don't think I need special treatment, I don't really feel quite in place often. Many exotics have the engines in the back, which I don't have, or they have V8's, which certainly don't quite compare.

I don't know, I have yet to really go to a show and feel "in place." It's tough, and a little weird for me. Maybe it's because I want to appreciate everything, but pull up and definitely feel that the car is under-appreciated simply because of it's age, when it's more than capable of playing with many of the newer exotics, even as old as it is (which, let's be honest, isn't that old). I've been seeing a resurgence of R129's show up on the road, and I'm totally a fan of driving the hell out of them, but rarely see them at shows. Locally there's a guy with a red 96 (I think) SL500, but I've only talked to him a couple times, because every time he shows up, the throws the For Sale sign up on the dash. Maybe he's bitter I'm not looking to collect a ton of R129s?

Regardless, I continue to go all over the place with the SL600, because it needs to be seen and needs to be enjoyed. I'll be rolling it over 100,000 miles soon, and have every intention of putting many more on it. The only two other SL600's I know of have 35k and 48k respectively. I know they're not cheap cars, but when will the owners really start to learn that it's cheaper to keep driving them? It hurts me to hear about people who are scared of the repairs. Sure, they're really expensive, but in words I couldn't put together better myself, "the only way to keep them running is to keep them on the road."
